ALMOST THERE
We are heading to our safe harbors. We are getting out of the cruel winter storm of glib admissions of torture, total economic meltdown, corruption and chaos. We head away from all of that after today and surround ourselves with the people and places that mean the most to us. We are relaxing into our lives for at least a little while, taking a time out to spend our holidays in peace and comfort with friends and family. We’ll enjoy the simple moments in life that bring us happiness and get to enjoy our children and reconnect with good friends. It is time to take a break from chaos and disappointment and fill up with joy and laughter and renew ourselves for whatever comes our way in the New Year.
My wish for you is that you take a little time for yourself and feel the goodness of what you did this past year. And not just the good and great things you did for your best friend or your family, but what you did for our Nation. Our broken, limping, challenged Nation. It is time for you to feel how amazing you were this year. To acknowledge that you did something much bigger than you ever thought you could. This is the moment to hold your head up and take it all in. To feel the pride you earned for yourself and to pat yourself on the back and know that you made things change!
I’m sure you have always showed up for your family and your friends but this year you showed up for your Nation and I’ll never forget it. You worked, you read, you listened, you engaged and most importantly you showed up for America when she needed you most and we prevailed! We were able to rise simply because we armed ourselves to the teeth with knowledge and facts and we all showed up ready. Sounds easier than it was but wasn’t it worth it? And doesn’t it feel good to be pulling together rather than pushing string?
I know it wasn’t easy to take that first step, harder for some than others, but together we exposed the hundreds of reasons to change course, steer out of the storms and move to higher ground. Only you could have moved this ship of State and you did. We are going in another direction now because you were on board and saved this country. The ship got beat up bad and we’ll need to rebuild in the New Year so I want you to rest, relax and regroup because your time and energy will be needed once again.
In a few hours, all of use here will stand down for a few weeks too. We don't turn away, a patriot is every vigilant, but we turn off the engines and sail for a bit, go with the tide and enjoy life with the people closest to us and get reenergized. We know we will be called upon again, and much too soon for most of us, but it is after all our most sacred duty to protect those we love the most whether they appreciate it or not. It’s a good feeling. FEEL it.
2009 will be hard and completely worth it. I’m so looking forward to getting us out at sea once again albeit on smoother seas, on a much better course with a superior navigator on board, but you’ll never know how grateful I am that you are a fellow passenger.
Spend this last day of the 2008 with me so I can celebrate YOU. Tell me your most important memory of 2008 or the day you knew things would change or had to. Or the day you heard something or read something so bizarre or so corrupt that you had to throw your head back and laugh out loud. You do know that 2008 will not be forgotten anytime soon!
Please know that I have the utmost regard for all of you and how grateful I am that you are in my life everyday.
On behalf of Duffy, John Campbell and my dear sweet Johann may I wish you all a WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON and many of those really great moments of pure joy, true love and PEACE!
MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY HANUKKAH! AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
